Most security administrators are eager beavers when it comes to deploying and running antivirus software<\/a> on any computer they can get their hands on. This includes Microsoft Windows Servers running your SQL Server Database engine.<\/p>\n

Do not let security administrators scan your database files and make your 2012 Dell xeon with eight cores perform like a 1996 Gateway Pentium 4 single core. <\/p>\n

I have seen the results of antivirus software scanning the database files while I am trying to execute basic queries. <\/p>\n

It is extremely painful.<\/p>\n

With that said. Please make sure your security administrator is not scanning the following files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
*.mdf<\/td>\nprimary data files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
*.ndf<\/td>\nsecondary data files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
*.ldf<\/td>\nlog files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
*.bak<\/td>\nbackup files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
*.trn<\/td>\ntransaction files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
*.trc<\/td>\ntrace files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Other important directories that should not be scanned are the following. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
\\backup<\/td>\ndefault directory for backup files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\\data<\/td>\ndefault directory for data files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\\log<\/td>\ndefault directory for error, log, dump files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\\ftdata<\/td>\ndefault directory for full text index files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\\repldata<\/td>\ndefault directory for snapshot & replication data files<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
user defined ntfs share<\/td>\ndirectory for filestream blobs<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Most of these sub-directories are in the default installation path.<\/p>\n

“C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft SQL Server\\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\\MSSQL”.<\/p>\n

Files are constantly being created or updated in theses directories. Allowing a antivirus program to run in these directories will effect the performance of your database.<\/p>\n
